Parkinson’s disease fundamentally alters motor functions in several ways:
- Tremors: The most recognisable symptom, typically starting in the hands.
- Muscle Stiffness: Limbs and trunk may become rigid, limiting range of motion.
- Bradykinesia: This slowness of movement makes everyday tasks challenging.
- Postural Instability: Imbalance can cause difficulty walking and raise the chance of falling.
- Gait Changes: People with Parkinson’s often develop a shuffling walk with reduced arm swing.
These motor symptoms are central to why specialised physiotherapy and exercise physiology are critical in managing Parkinson’s disease effectively.
