Pediatric Occupational Therapy FAQ

What is pediatric occupational therapy?

Pediatric OT helps children develop the skills they need for everyday life—at home, at school, and in the community. It supports areas like fine motor skills, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and independence so children can participate confidently in their daily routine and activities.

Starting school is a big milestone. At Rebound Health, our School Readiness Program is led by experienced paediatric occupational therapists who help children develop the skills needed to thrive in the classroom and beyond. This program ensures your child feels prepared and confident for their first day of school. We focus on:

  • Fine motor skills (pencil grip, cutting, drawing)
  • Gross motor skills (balance, strength, coordination)
  • Social skills (sharing, following instructions, group play)
  • Emotional regulation (managing feelings and transitions)
  • Independence (dressing, toileting, organising belongings)

Children with developmental delays, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), anxiety, sensory processing differences, or motor skill challenges can all benefit. Even children without a diagnosis may gain support in areas like handwriting, emotional regulation, or social interaction.

Therapy sessions are tailored to each child’s needs and often feel like play. Activities may include games that build fine motor skills, sensory activities for regulation, exercises to improve strength and balance, or social play to encourage interaction. Parents and families are always involved so strategies can be continued at home and school.

We want therapy to be accessible for every family, which is why we offer a range of funding options. Depending on your child’s needs and circumstances, support may be available through Medicare, the NDIS, or private health insurance.

  • GP Referral (Medicare EPC): Eligible children can access up to 5 subsidised sessions each year, with rebates of around $58 per session.
  • NDIS: Rebound Health is a registered NDIS provider, supporting both self-managed and plan-managed participants. Learn more on the NDIS website.
  • Private Health: We accept all major health funds and can process claims on the spot at our clinic.

Yes. Depending on your child’s needs, therapy may include the use of assistive devices such as adapted tools for writing, sensory supports, or seating options that make daily activities easier. These devices are carefully chosen to match your child’s goals and support independence at home and school.

At Rebound Health, we also integrate exercise physiology when needed to support strength, coordination, and overall physical wellbeing. Combined with paediatric OT, it helps children build endurance and confidence in their daily tasks, ensuring therapy supports the whole child’s development.
