Rebound’s Physiotherapists use Exercise to support people diagnosed with Schizophrenia

If you or someone you know is living with schizophrenia, you know how challenging it can be to manage the symptoms and maintain a healthy lifestyle. That's where exercise with a Physiotherapist can make a significant difference in your life. People diagnosed with Schizophrenia often experience health challenges alongside the symptoms of this mental health condition. According to research, those with schizophrenia have a 10-20 year reduced life expectancy, evidence suggests this reduction in life expectancy is due to preventable causes, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

At Rebound Health, we understand the unique challenges that individuals with schizophrenia face, and we've tailored our approach to help you achieve your health and wellness goals. Our Physiotherapists work with you one-on-one or in small groups to create a personalized exercise plan that meets your unique needs and abilities.

We know that regular exercise can help improve physical and mental health, reduce stress, and increase self-esteem. But, we also understand that starting a new exercise routine can be daunting, especially if you're living with schizophrenia. That's why we're here to guide you every step of the way. Other benefits include:

  • Physical activity interventions can reduce the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia while improving physical fitness and health.

  • The dose is crucial: 90mins+ per week of moderate physical activity is the most beneficial - but lower doses still have benefit.

  • Expert supervision by our Physiotherapists increases benefits and ensures you stick with the program!

Our Physiotherapists provide a supportive and encouraging environment that helps you build confidence, establish a sense of purpose, and achieve your fitness goals. We understand the importance of social support, and we've created a community where individuals with schizophrenia can interact with others, build relationships, and form supportive networks.

Backed up by evidence!

  • A study of a 10 week intervention, aiming to achieve more than 90mins of moderate / vigorous intensity exercise per week. The study had a retention rate of >80% (less than 20% drop out) and most participants engaged in ~107mins of moderate / vigorous intensity exercise

  • Results: significant improvements in positive and negative symptoms when compared to the control group + fitness benefits.

At Rebound Health, we know that every individual is unique, and we treat each person with the care and attention they deserve. Our goal is to help you live your best life possible, free from the limitations that schizophrenia can impose.

What do these exercise-based sessions with a Physiotherapist actually look like?

We start with a warm up that might include walking, cycling and or body movement. The main portion of the session is active, movement-based and would often use:

  • Cardio equipment

  • Resistance equipment

  • Maybe some games

Then we finish with a cool down.
