Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles that sit like a trampoline at the bottom of the pelvic floor. They stretch from your tail bone at the back to the pubic bone at the front and to the sitting bones at the side.  The pelvic floor is important for:

  • Preventing leaking of urine, stools or wind

  • Supporting your organs

  • Sexual function

  • Optimal postural control

Pelvic floor issues can occur at any age but are more common during pregnancy, postnatally and during menopause. Some common pelvic floor problems seen at Physiotherapy for Women include:

  • Leakage of urine, wind or stools

  • Bladder or stool urgency

  • Prolapse of pelvic organs into the vagina or rectum

  • Pain and/or discomfort with sexual intimacy, vaginal examinations or with tampon use

  • Lack of sensation with sexual intercourse

  • Lower back or pelvic pain
